5 Ways On How To Survive Midterms & Finals Week

Tests are the worst things that could have happened to the educational system. We all dread it. The amount of breakdowns students have before, during and after these exams are insurmountable. We know what it feels like to be unprepared and stressed out because of the lack of sleep you’re getting.

Here are a few tips to help you relieve some of that stress and overcome any exam!

1. Don’t Cram

Cramming is one of the worst things you can do when preparing for an exam. Cramming only leads to unwanted all-nighters, crying spells and unhealthy food choices.  If you have exams coming up, try to prepare at the most 1 week before. Have a schedule of the earliest times you should go to sleep and wake up so you have enough time & energy to study. As well as a schedule of your study times.

2. Eat Healthy!

This is not the time to load up on junk food like chips and fried foods. We know how tempting it can be trying to resist the ice cream in the dining halls. Try food like fish and baked chicken. Load up on veggies & fruits and drink lots of water! Your body will thank you for trying to keep it healthy especially when you need the energy to study for your exams. And if you’re feeling frisky you can sneak a dark chocolate bar in there if you need some sweets.

3. Remove All Distractions

Yes, your friends can wait. You don’t need to take that Walmart Trip at 1 am for Honey Buns and Twizzlers or go to that one party where “bae” will be. There will be plenty of time to party and take Walmart trips after acing those exams. While studying, try to turn your phone off and/or install an app blocker like SelfControl or Cold Turkey to help you focus on one task at a time.

4. Take Breaks

Studying way too much can take a toll on you and your mind. After a long period of studying, you probably won’t even be able to retain the information you just learned! So, chill out for a little. Take your mind off of your work and go exercise or do a hobby you enjoy. Take that time to relax, but only for a short period.

5. Talk to Someone

Taking any exam is not easy. Maybe go talk to a friend or someone you can confide in if it’s getting too much to handle.  If you are not able to do that, then take a trip to the Counseling Center. It’s here for your moral support. The school has placed this center for your benefit. Also during big exams the school always has a program planned like Petting Therapy Dogs. So look out for the different programs here at UAlbany during midterm or finals week to help you with your test anxiety.

We have faith that you can get through these exams and we wish you Good Luck. May the odds be ever in your favor!
